When your brain senses that a movement might be unsafe, it tightens muscles to protect you. This is called protective muscle guarding. Your glutes are prime protectors — they guard your lower back, hips, knees, and feet. So when you stretch them, foam roll them, or try to strengthen them... your brain just tightens them MORE.
